Subject: RV Marching Band  - June 20

Date: Friday, June 20, 2008 13:25:30

Hello everyone.  WOW!  What a week it's been for the '08 Red Devil Marching Band!

Here's the recap:

TUESDAY, JUNE 10th marked the very first full-band rehearsal of the '08 season.  We had a very good turnout and were only missing a handful of students due to other end-of-year school functions.  After an introduction to the upcoming season, the students got to break off, meet with the instructors and work with our Leadership candidates on the basic stationary commands: To The Ready, Attention & Parade Rest.  We all got back to together in the PAC to refine the skills with the whole band and staff.  It got pretty intense!  The extra 'snap' and crispness was very impressive for this time of the year!  We finished off the night with our first "March Off" of the season with the winning trophy going to junior APRIL HORNER of the clarinet section.  Let's see which section has the most trophies by the end of Band Camp!  The vibe of the evening was great with a lot of tremendous effort being put towards everything we did.  GREAT JOB!  Everyone got some homework (see below) to prepare for the June 24th rehearsal.

-  On SATURDAY, JUNE 14th there were 2 events going on.  The Instrumental Boosters were having their first summer Can Drive at the Mt Holly Acme and the Lumberton Wal-Mart and made over $1300!!!  Remember, the funds go to the students' accounts to defray costs or completely pay for the many upcoming band expenditures (Band Camp, Nationals, Leadership Camps, etc...).  Make sure you sign up for the next one. There was also a REHEARSAL over here at RV for the Color Guard & Percussion sections.  Here, the students and staff began working together to establish rehearsal procedures and introduce some of the fundamentals for the upcoming season.  Lots of work got done which will set us up for some great rehearsals to come!

 -  On TUESDAY, JUNE 17th we had the 2nd Music Reading Session for the musicians.  Here, students got to preview some of the band warm-ups and field show music for the upcoming season.  It went well!  It gave us all a chance to get to know each other a little more.  We were able to read through "Claustrophobia" & "Kinetophobia" with some success.  This will help us game plan the upcoming rehearsals so we get the most out of them and the students.  This year's group has a really cool personality and I look forward to working with everyone over the next year!

  • NJ DCI OPEN-CLASS DRUM CORPS SEEKS BRASS PLAYERS!

The Raiders Drum & Bugle Corps from Wayne, NJ is seeking talented and hard-working brass players to fill spots in their hornline for the '08 season!  Have you considered marching in a drum corps?  What do you think about traveling?  How about playing before THOUSANDS in a World Championship competition?  If you'd like to join, E-mail director Tom Maiello at tommaiello@raidersdbc.org and visit their sites at http://www.raidersdbc.org/index.html

and

If you have any questions about the drum corps activity, in general, please feel free to ask any RV staff member!

  • MUSIC IS COOL!

Each summer, the USSBA & YEA! sponsor the ever-popular "MUSIC IS COOL!" clinics which give high school marching band students from all over the country the opportunity to learn from the best instructors in the marching arts and play & spin along with a world-class music organization!  This year's local "Music is Cool" clinic will be in Clifton, NJ on July 5th!  Check out the link at http://www.yea.org/site/PageServer?pagename=music_is_cool_student  I will have more information at the 6/24 rehearsal.  But for now, check it out and let me know if you're interested!

  • MARCHING BAND WORKSHOPS

What if you had the chance learn & develop skills in the course of a few days that would normally take a few months?  What if mastering these skills helped your band - OUR band - rise to heights never seen in RV band history?  What if you were told of a time & place where this could happen for you?  Would you do it?  Here's some info from one such program:

Everyone involved with your marching band program will benefit from this comprehensive and dynamic workshop. The country’s best clinicians will lead students and directors of all experience levels in sessions that focus on the fundamentals – the building blocks of every successful band. In four intense days packed with tips and tools, you’ll learn the newest techniques and the latest in leadership skills. From charting and drill design to maintaining a winning attitude, you’ll go home with everything you need to jump-start your marching band season.

There are TWO locations within easy driving distance from RV:

  • Kutztown University (July 12-15) or

  • West Chester University (July 29 - August 1).

If you're interested, I've attached a registration form for your reference.  This is COMPLETELY independent from RVRHS but is something that could very well change your life.  Please consider attending as we enter our greatest season yet!
